South Jersey Gears up for First Full Week of High School Football The first full week of the South Jersey Football Season begins this weekend. As we will every week, we'll preview the top games in South Jersey in two parts. Here is part one in the opening of what should be an outstanding season. Records are from last year.
FRIDAY
Camden (9-3) at Camden Catholic (9-1), 7 p.m.
This is a WJFL Constitution game where both teams move to after competing in the Royal. Camden, which advanced to the South Jersey Group 3 title game before losing to Delsea, has been hit hard by graduation. Camden Catholic has one of the top players in South Jersey in senior RB-DB Nazir Streater, who rushed for 1,106 yards and 18 TDs. Last year the Irish beat Camden, 21-16 and they will again be favored.
Cherokee (8-3) at Shawnee (9-3), 7p.m.
Cherokee, considered among the top teams in South Jersey, is the favorite in this WJFL American Division game between rivals from the Lenape School District. The Chiefs will be looking for revenge after last year's 35-14 loss to Shawnee. Meanwhile Shawnee is in sort of a rebuilding year. The Renegades will still be highly competitive, but they are breaking in many new players, especially offense. Stopping Cherokee RB John Lovett, who rushed for 1,306 yards and 13 TDs, will be a major chore.
Cherry Hill West (4-6) at Seneca (6-5), 7p.m.
While Camden Catholic is the favorite in the WJFL Constitution Division, these two teams bear watching. West has one of South Jersey's top players in WR-DB Harrison Hand, who has fielded several Division I offers. Seneca is led by senior QB J.J. Scarpello, who threw for 1,844 yards and 17 TDs. Last year Seneca earned a 30-0 win over West and this year things should be much closer.
Collingswood (6-4) at Haddonfield (9-2), 7p.m.
This is a key WJFL Colonial game, with the winner emerging as the leading contender behind favored West Deptford. Collingswood QB Jovan Allie is an explosive runner, while taking over Haddonfield's offense is senior Brendan Gilmartin, who played tight end and made some real noise at DE, where he had 12.5 sacks. Haddonfield won last year's game, 7-0 and don't be surprised if the defenses dominate once again.
Clayton (9-3) at Gloucester (7-3), 7p.m.
What a year it was for Clayton, which reached the South Jersey Group 1 final before losing to Pennsville, With Pennsville having moved out of the Classic Division, Clayton and Gloucester are two of the main contenders, along with Schalick. Clayton senior RB Courey Carr rushed for 414 yards and five TDs and averaged 8.0 yards per carry. He should have a larger workload this year on offense. Gloucester is 15-6 over the past two seasons and while there are major hits to graduation, the Lions should seriously contend.
