South Jersey Football Games of the Week (Part 2) Shawnee will look for revenge while also continuing to show that the Renegades aren't rebuilding but contending. The Renegades game at Washington Township, highlights Part 2 of our South Jersey Football Games of the Week.
Shawnee (2-0) at Washington Township (1-1), Friday, 7 p.m.
So much for the expected rebuilding at Shawnee. The Renegades opened the season by upsetting Cherokee, 16-13 and then last week beat a solid Allentown team, 17-10. Against Allentown Dan Wigley rushed for 103 yards and a 20-yard TD on 19 carries. Shawnee is winning with an efficient offense and a strong defense, led by senior linebacker Jax Luzinski. Washington Township bounced back from a 35-7 opening loss to Hammonton to beat Atlantic City 16-14 as senior Mike Piperno threw two TD passes. Last year Township upset Shawnee, 19-17 and that win had a lot to do with the Minutemen earning a Group 5 playoff berth. Besides being a WJFL American Division matchup, this game has playoff implications, with Shawnee in Group 4 and Washington Township in Group 5.
Paul VI (1-1) at No. Delsea (0-2), Friday, 7 p.m.
Delsea has one of the tougher opening schedules in South Jersey, playing two defending South Jersey champions and two consensus top-5 teams, losing 54-28 opening week to defending SJ Group 4 champ Timber Creek and 28-21 last week to defending SJ Group 2 champion Cedar Creek. The Crusaders will look to get fullback Rasaad Williams going. Among South Jersey's top backs, he has rushed for 116 yards (3.7 avg.) and 1 TD in the first two games. Paul VI is coming off a 21-14 loss to Burlington Township. The Eagles have a difficult schedule, which will also include games against Clearview, Cherokee and Timber Creek in three successive weeks beginning Oct. 7.
Williamstown (1-1) at Hammonton (1-1), Friday, 7 p.m.
Both teams are looking to rebound from losses. After opening with a 45-10 win over Kingsway, Williamstown lost to South Jersey's top team, St. Augustine, 48-10. Hammonton QB Malachi Winters missed Friday's 15-10 loss to Rancocas Valley with a shoulder injury. While Hammonton has a run-oriented offense, the Blue Devils didn't complete a pass in the loss. Senior Daniel Figueroa leads the ground attack for Hammonton, having rushed for 179 yards (6.2 avg.) and 3 TDs.
Haddon Heights (2-0) at Woodbury (1-1), Saturday, 10:30 a.m.
A win here would put Haddon Heights right in the thick of the WJFL Memorial race. That is because Woodbury has already beaten defending Colonial Patriot (which is now the WJFL Memorial) champ Paulsboro. Heights allowed 12 points in each of its first two wins over Haddon Township and Penns Grove. After Woodbury's opening 14-13 win over Paulsboro, the Thundering Herd lost 21-6 to defending South Jersey Group 1 champion Pennsville. Woodbury faces a challenge in defending Heights junior QB Matt DiOrio, who has completed 21 of 34 for 319 yards, 5 TDs and 1 interception.
