Planning Your NJSIAA Championship Boys & Girls Basketball Schedule One of the best aspects of the NJSIAA boys’ and girls’ basketball state tournament is the suspense in the one-and-done setting.
Unlike in Pennsylvania, where it is possible for a team to lose and still advance, in New Jersey, one loss ends a season. And the way the tournament is structured, the teams are playing almost every other day, which gives the tournament a fast, quick, frenzied pace.
The South Jersey public school championships are played at the higher seeded teams. The Non-Public finals are played at a neutral court. (That’s because there is no state semifinal in the Non-Publics so this is considered the state semifinal and those are played on neutral courts). The South Jersey Non-Public A and B championships will be boy-girl doubleheaders staged at Jackson Liberty.
In most cases, teams have to win four games to be crowned a sectional title. If a team earns a first round bye, which happens more frequently in the Non-Public groups, then that squad has to win three games to earn a sectional title.
For those looking to plan their schedule, here is a listing of the dates for the sectional finals and the public school state semifinals. In the state semifinals, the South Jersey champion will meet the Central Jersey champ. The times of the public school sectional finals are to be determined.
Some teams from the seven-county South Jersey area will also compete in Central Jersey. The Central Jersey listings include those Groups in which teams from the seven-country South Jersey area will be competing.
Boys’ Basketball
South Jersey Group 1 final: Monday March 6.
South Jersey Group 2 final: Tuesday March 7.
South Jersey Group 3 final: Monday March 6.
South Jersey Group 4 final: Tuesday March 7.
South Jersey Non-Public A final: Tuesday March 7, at Jackson Liberty, 7 p.m.
South Jersey Non-Public B final: Wednesday March 8, at Jackson Liberty, 7.
Central Jersey Group 1 final: Monday March 6.
Central Jersey Group 2 final: Tuesday March 7.
Central Jersey Group 3 final: Monday March 6.
State semifinals
Group 1: Wednesday March 8 at Toms River North, 6 p.m.
Group 2: Thursday March 9 at Perth Amboy, 7.
Group 3: Wednesday March 8 at Brick Memorial, 7.
Group 4: Thursday March 9 at Egg Harbor Township, 5:30.
Girls Basketball
South Jersey Group 1 final: Tuesday March 7.
South Jersey Group 2 final: Monday March 6.
