Timber Creek Football Taking Nothing...

Timber Creek Football Taking Nothing... Timber Creek football taking nothing for granted

While the intensity doesn’t match what takes place in the fall, summer practices for high school sports teams are not really like a day at the beach.

That was evident at a recent workout for Timber Creek’s football team.

Earlier this month, the Chargers were on the field during an informal workout. The players weren’t in pads, but the coaches were whipping them into shape.

Lap after lap, the players ran during the evening workout.

Timber Creek, like all top programs realize that the work done in the offseason goes a long way to building a champion.

And coach Rob Hinson and his crew certainly know what it takes to win a championship.

Since 2011 the Chargers have won four South Jersey titles. They have won consecutive South Jersey Group 4 titles and are looking to threepeat for the first time in a relatively brief history.

Timber Creek fielded its first varsity football team in 2001 and went 0-10. The school didn’t have a winning record until going 6-4 in Hinson’s second season in 2007. There hasn’t been a losing season since.

And now the Chargers are expected to have one of the most exciting teams around with senior Devin Leary at quarterback.

Leary, who has committed to North Carolina State, set a single-season state record this past season in passing yards (3,688) and touchdown passes (48).

He is a leader on and off the field. Leary was at the practice showing the younger player the finer points of playing quarterback.

What is good about summer workouts is that teams can work more on fundamentals, which Timber Creek was doing.

During the season, a team must prepare for an opponent each week and that is what the majority of practice is about.

In the summer, teams get to brush up on fundamentals. That is why at this Timber Creek workout, the team had its position coaches going through the finer points of the game with the players.

This is after the players had done a sufficient amount of running.

Timber Creek runs a fast-paced offense. All the players, from the linemen to Leary at quarterback, have to be in exceptional shape for the offense to click.

And the defensive players also have to display that same endurance, playing against many other fast-paced offenses.

So even though it was a summer workout, there was no joking around. It was down to business.

The Chargers first real game wouldn’t be for nearly two months, but the two-time defending South Jersey Group 4 champs understand there will be a bullseye on the collective backs after a 12-0 season.

And the tone was set for a season of hard work, during this summer evening and many others after.
