South Jersey Football Preview Part II
St. Joseph (5-0) at Allentown (4-1), Friday. Allentown’s lone loss was a 35-22 loss to South Jersey Top 10 team Shawnee. The Redbirds are the defending Central Jersey Group 4 champions. St. Joe has a ground-oriented attack, led by senior Qwahsin Townsel, who has rushed for 531 yards (8.4 avg.) and 15 TDs. (That is not a misprint). Sophomore Jada Byers has rushed for 437 yards (14.1 avg.) and six TDs.
Penns Grove (4-1) at Florence (2-2), Friday, 7. Florence is fighting for a Central Jersey Group 3 spot and would a lot for its chances with a win. The Flashes have lost both games by a TD, 22-14 to Burlington City and 49-45 last week to Palmyra. High-flying Penns Grove is averaging 51.7 points per game. Sophomore QB Kavon Lewis has completed 80.2 percent of his passes for 1,345 yards and 15 touchdowns. Senior Samej Moore has rushed for 480 yards (7.7 avg.) and eight TDs. Junior Tyreke Brown has 24 receptions for 681 yards and nine TDs. This might be a game where the first team to 50 wins.
Eastern (4-1) at Pennsauken (3-2), Saturday, noon. This game is important for both teams, since Eastern is looking to earn a SJ Group 5 playoff berth and Pennsauken, a SJ Group 4 spot. Eastern won its first four games before last week’s 47-3 loss to South Jersey’s top team, Timber Creek. Pennsauken is coming off a 48-14 loss to unbeaten Camden Catholic. Eastern junior Manny Azuonwu has rushed for 432 yards (7.2 avg.) and three TDs. Junior Ty Franden has rushed for 364 yards (5.8 avg.) and five TDs.
Willingboro (3-2) at Woodrow Wilson (4-0), Saturday, noon. After losing its first two games, Willingboro has won three in a row after last week’s 36-31 victory over Holy Cross. Wilson will be looking for revenge after losing to Willingboro, 25-6 last year. The Tigers are coming off a 30-20 win over Moorestown in a battle of unbeaten teams.
Paulsboro (4-0) vs Haddonfield (4-0), Saturday at Cherry Hill West 1. This is the beginning of a tough four-game stretch for Haddonfield, that also includes West Deptford, Cedar Creek and Sterling. Those four teams are a combined 15-2. Paulsboro senior Dehron Holloway is among the most explosive running backs in South Jersey. He has rushed for 806 yards (9.3 avg.) and nine touchdowns. Quarterback Colin McCarthy has completed 56.9 percent of his passes for 445 yards and four touchdowns. Junior defensive end Santino Morina has four sacks. Haddonfield has one of the most explosive players in junior receiver Davis Smith, but he is out with a broken clavicle. Junior quarterback Jay Foley has thrown six touchdown passes and his mobility could give Paulsboro a problem.
