South Jersey Football Preview Part II
Here are more of the top games for Week 7 of the South Jersey football season
Williamstown (3-2) at Shawnee (3-2), Friday, 7. Shawnee has to rebound from a devastating loss. The Renegades held a 21-3 lead early in the fourth quarter, only to lose, 25-21 to Camden Catholic. Senior receiver and sometime running back Daevon Robinson had a receiving and rushing TD for the Renegades. The North Carolina State recruit is one of the more versatile offensive players in South Jersey. Williamstown currently holds the seventh spot in SJ Group 5 according to Gridironnewjersey.com, but the Braves could still face a difficult road in qualifying. That’s because their last two games before the playoff cutoff are against Timber Creek (5-0) and Cherokee (4-1). Shawnee is in the running for a SJ Group 4 berth and the Renegades would go a long way toward earning a spot with a win. Shawnee faces Seneca (2-3) and Hammonton (2-4) before the cutoff.
Cherry Hill West (0-5) at Winslow Twp. (1-4), Friday, 7. Both of these teams have played better than the record has indicated. West is coming off a 28-21 loss against Trenton, the third defeat by a touchdown or less. Winslow Township is coming off a 28-13 loss to unbeaten Rancocas Valley. The Eagles, like Cherry Hill West, have played better than their record indicates.
Sterling (4-1) at Audubon (2-3), Saturday, 11. Audubon defeated Haddon Heights, 26-14 last week. The Green Wave have played a tough early season schedule and are an overtime loss to Collingswood away from having a winning record. Sterling has been among the most improved teams in South Jersey. The Silver Knights were just 1-9 last season. Now they are aiming for a playoff berth in what should be a very competitive South Jersey Group 2 field. Sterling’s lone loss was 34-33 to West Deptford. Audubon currently holds the eighth and final spot in the SJ Group 2 playoff race according to gridironnewjersey.com and meets Bordentown (3-2) and Overbrook (2-3) before the playoff cutoff.
Camden (4-1) at Pennsauken (2-3), Saturday noon. Camden has won three in a row since a 45-6 loss to unbeaten Camden Catholic. The Panthers, who had a bye last week, have pitched consecutive shutouts against Cedar Creek and Cherry Hill West. Senior Najyere Edwards has rushed for 465 yards (6.3 avg.) and 4 TDs. Senior Eli Sloan-El leads the defensive effort with nine sacks and 10 hurries. The Panthers will also look to avenge last year’s 20-13 loss to Pennsauken. The Indians are coming off last week’s 40-21 loss to Eastern. Pennsauken is still very much in the running for a SJ Group 4 playoff spot, where a 4-4 record might be good enough. The Indians face West Windsor Plainsboro South (1-5) and Seneca (2-3) before the playoff cutoff.
St. Joseph (6-0) at Cedar Creek (5-1), Saturday, 1. This is realistically for the WJFL Independence title since both teams are 3-0. Cedar’s lone loss came to Camden, 14-0, but the Pirates had a 28-20 loss to Delsea changed to a victory due to an ineligible player. St. Joseph is averaging 49.3 points per game and the Wildcats have been in just one competitive game, a 42-26 win over Holy Spirit. In that game, St. Joseph overcame a 14-point deficit. Senior Qwahsin Townsel has rushed for 656 yards (8.1 avg.) and 17 TDs to lead the Wildcats.
