South Jersey Football Preview Part 2
Here are more of some of the top games this week, all with playoff implications
Gateway (5-1) at Burlington City (6-0), Friday, 7. High flying Burlington City is averaging 41 points per game and is among the most improved teams in South Jersey, after going 2-8 last year. The Blue Devils will attempt to avenge last year’s 49-18 loss to Gateway. The Gators have won three in a row since its lone loss, a 21-14 defeat to Paulsboro. It appears as if Burlington City has clinched a berth in Central Jersey Group 1 and Gateway would definitely clinch a South Jersey Group 1 spot with a win
Paulsboro (5-1) at Florence (3-3), Friday, 7. Last week’s win over Maple Shade gave Florence coach Joe Frappolli his 300th career win. Florence is currently 10th in the Central Jersey Group 1 power ratings, two spots behind New Egypt, sitting the eighth and final spot. Florence will meet New Egypt next weekend ina game that could decide the final playoff berth. Paulsboro is currently the No. 1 seed in SJ Group 1. Paulsboro senior Dehron Holloway has rushed for 1,082 yards, (8.6 avg.) and 13 TDs.
Woodbury (5-1) at Penns Grove (5-1), Saturday, noon. Woodbury is currently the No. 2 seed in SJ Group 1 and Penns Grove is No. 3 according to Gridironnewjersey.com. High scoring Penns Grove is averaging 51.1 points per game and is led by sophomore quarterback Kavon Lewis. He has completed 80.2 percent of his passes for 1,654 yards and 20 TDs. Last year Penns Grove defeated Woodbury twice, including 20-8 in a SJ Group 1 game. Woodbury has won five in a row since an opening 32-0 loss to Paulsboro.
St. Augustine (4-3) at St. Joseph (7-0), Saturday, noon. St. Joseph is in the running for the top seed in Non-Public Group 2. The Wildcats Qwahsin Townsel has rushed for 763 yards (7.4 avg.) and 18 TDs. Sophomore Jada Byers has rushed for 732 yards (13.2 avg.) and 11 TDs. St. Joseph will look to avenge last year’s 42-0 loss to the Hermits. St. Augustine junior Chris Allen has completed 64.2 percent of his passes and thrown for 947 and four TDs. The Hermits could very well still qualify for a Non-Public Group 4 spot even with a loss.
Haddonfield (5-1) at Cedar Creek (5-2), Saturday, 1. Haddonfield missed a 30-yard field goal at the end of regulation and ended losing to West Deptford, 17-14 in OT last week. Those two teams could meet in the postseason. Cedar Creek is currently third in the Group 2 power ratings (according to Gridironnewjersey.com) but has played one more game than many of the teams. This is the Pirates last game until the cutoff. Last year Cedar Creek won a 17-14 game at Haddonfield and this one could be as close.
