Pomona Looking to Defend Tri-County Swim Title

It should be quite a conclusion when the Tri-County Swim League holds its championship on Saturday and Sunday at Brookside Swim Club in Glassboro.

Pomona of Cinnaminson is the defending champion of the Burt German Tri-County championship and the Dolphins sent notice recently that they don’t plan on relinquishing their title very easily.

Pomona ended the dual meet season on July 21 with a 329-225 win over chief contender Wedgewood of Haddonfield to earn the Division A championship.

Both teams finished with 4-1 records in Division A, but Pomona’s head-to-head win was the difference.

Five swimmers were double winners for the Dolphins. They were Ally Gozdan in the girls 15-18 100 meter freestyle and 50 backstroke. Emily Wisniewski captured the 100 IM and 50 butterfly in the girls’ 15-18.

Maddy Neely won the 100 freestyle and 50 butterfly in the girls 13-14 age group. George Willard was the 9-10 boys’ 50 free style and 25 breaststroke champ and Sam Adams won the 25 backstroke and 25 butterfly in the same age group.

Last year Pomona halted Wedgewood’s dominance by winning a close championship, 726-717 after also winning the A Division.

These two swim clubs are expected to be the two battling for the title this year. There could be other teams in contention.

Over the weekend Deer Brook of Medford, edged Pomona 662.5 to 652 in the Jack Haffner Swim Championships, the meet for Burlington County schools.

Before last season, Wedgewood, under veteran coach Jim Villa, had won four consecutive Tri-County League championships.

Last year, Wedgewood of Haddonfield won its first-ever Burt German Tri-County Swim championship, earning the title by 38 points. This year, the Ducks defended their title in a much more convincing fashion, claiming the championship by scoring 760.5 points. Second place Pheasant Run of Cinnaminson ended with 611 points. Another perennial Burlington County power, Deer Brook of Medford, captured third place with 542.5 points.

One of the largest South Jersey sporting events of the summer will conclude another season when the Tri-County Swim League holds its annual championship.

Pomona’s lone loss came to Greenfields of West Deptford, which finished with a 2-3 record in Division A.

So it’s possible that Deer Brook and Greenfields, could make a run at the title.

There are 34 teams in the Tri-County League, scattered in six divisions. The top team from every division but A moves up a division the following year, while the bottom team in each division with the exception of F, moves down a division next season.

Erlton of Cherry Hill won Division B with a 5-0 record, while Pheasant Run of Cinnaminson was second at 4-1.

Willowdale of Cherry Hill won Division C with a 5-0 mark while fellow Cherry Hill club Woodcrest was second at 4-1.

Wexford Leas of Cherry Hill captured Division D with a 5-0 mark, while Fox Hollow of Cherry Hill was second at 4-1

Whitman Square of Washington Township was the Division E winner with a 5-0 mark, while Georgetown of Bridgeton was second at 4-1.

Finally, Barclay Farm of Cherry Hill won Division F with a 4-1 mark, while Chestnut Run of Woodstown was second, also at 4-1.
