Part I: South Jersey Games of the Week

Part I: South Jersey Games of the Week

Here are some of the top high school football games this weekend:

Cherokee (0-0) at Shawnee (0-0), Friday, 7 pm.
This is among the better rivalries in South Jersey. Cherokee perennial Top 10 team, has been ranked outside the Top 10 this preseason. It’s not just because the Chiefs have a new coach in Brian Glatz, but he takes over a team that was hit hard by graduation. Still, in E.J. Bard, Cherokee has a running back capable of making the big play. Last year Cherokee opened the season with a 42-41 win over Shawnee and that helped vault the chiefs to the WJFL American Division title with a 5-0 division record. Shawnee is the defending South Jersey Group 4 champion and the Renegades quite frankly met much better competition in the division than in Group 4. Sr. two-way lineman JC Dobis (6-4, 270) leads what could be one of the best offensive lines in South Jersey.

Moorestown (0-0) at Winslow Twp. (0-1), Friday, 7 pm.
For those who like to see quarterback battles, this is the game for you. Last year Moorestown’s Brian McMonagle his WJFL Liberty game features a matchup of two of South Jersey's top senior quarterbacks in the Quakers' Brian McMonagle and the Eagles' Prince dru-Bey. Last year McMonagle threw for more than 1,500 yards and 16 TDs. He will attend Boston College on a baseball scholarship. Dru-Bey threw for 2,416 yards and 24 TDs last year and added two TD passes in last week’s 40-22 loss to Woodrow Wilson. This is a WJFL Liberty Division matchup and both teams are capable of contending.

Williamstown (1-0) at Rancocas Valley (1-0), Friday, 7 pm.
Williamstown opened with a solid 24-7 win over a Vineland team that was 8-2 each of the past two years. The Braves played the majority of the game without RB-DB Wade Inge, a Delaware State commit, who suffered a shoulder injury. QB J.C. Collins, who has committed to UMass, threw one TD pass and ran for two others. Rancocas Valley opened with a 36-0 win over Camden Catholic. Wide receiver Danny Kondras returned two punts for a touchdown and added a TD reception from Bryce Mangene.

Cedar Creek (1-0) at Camden (0-1), Friday, 7 pm.
These two teams could certainly meet in the playoffs since both are again in Group 2. Last year Camden beat the Pirates, 14-0 in the regular season. Camden is coming off a 20-6 loss to Maryland power Wise. The score was tied 6-6 after three quarters. New Camden quarterback Monte Williams, a transfer from Cherry Hill West, threw a TD pass to sophomore Corey Palmer. Cedar Creek is coming off a 20-14 win over serious postseason threat Willingboro. Cedar Creek has a tough schedule which includes games with last year’s Group 3 finalists Delsea and Woodrow Wilson and Group 2 playoff team Pleasantville.

Delsea (0-0) at Willingboro (0-1), Friday, 7 pm.
Delsea has won five of the last South Jersey Group 3 championships and has a team that is a consensus Top 5 squad in South Jersey. Leading the way is running back Aidan Bourget who last year rushed for 2,208 yards (9.4 avg.) and 28 TDs. Delsea may have the best rushing attack in South Jersey. Willingboro is coming off a 20-14 loss to Cedar Creek. This year Willingboro is in South Group 1 and the Chimeras could be a factor.
