Glassboro Leads South Jersey Group 1 Baseball Field
The NJSIAA high school baseball state tournament is just around the corner beginning on Monday May 20. In looking at South Jersey Group 1, there might not be a more balanced Group in South Jersey.
While the pairings aren’t official, NJ.com has posted the NJSIAA power points that will be close to the way the final ones are.
Here is a look at South Jersey Group 1…
Defending Champion: Pennsville. The Eagles beat Glassboro, 8-0 in last year’s South Jersey Group 1 final.
Favorite: Glassboro. The Bulldogs will be the top seed.
Other Contenders: Just about everybody. Maple Shade, Buena, Woodstown, Gloucester, Schalick, Pennsville, Overbrook, Pitman are among the teams that should contend. This will have a true Tri-County Conference flavor. Glassboro, Woodstown, Gloucester, Schalick Pennsville and Pitman are from that league.
Dark Horse: Haddon Township. The Hawks began the week as the No. 10 seed. While the Hawks have been up and down, they have the offense led by junior shortstop Jackson Green and senior outfielder Nick Squazzo. Haddon Township earned a berth in the Diamond Classic and even though the Hawks lost their opener to Cherry Hill West, they gained valuable experience by dueling with South Jersey’s top team.
Outlook: Glassboro is the favorite for a reason. The Bulldogs have wins over Pennsville, Woodstown, Pitman, just to name a few. Junior Noah Putney began the week hitting .450 with three home runs and 20 RBI. This is a Glassboro team that has one of the top offenses in Group 1.
Watch out for Woodstown, which has split with Glassboro. The Wolverines will try to make this a final farewell to long-time coach Lee Ware, who will be coaching his 46th and final season. Woodstown won the most recent meeting with Glassboro, 6-5, as Ben Kates earned he win. He allowed just three hits and three runs in 5 1/3 innings, but he did walk six.
As the season has gone on, Woodstown has improved so the Wolverines will be a tough out.
So will Gloucester. The Lions best win this season has been a 5-1 win over Glassboro as Ethan Carpenter pitched a complete game, limiting the Bulldogs to just six hits.
As good as Gloucester has been, Schalick recently beat the Lions, 14-0, so the Cougars will be heard from.
Teams outside the Tri-County Conference such as Buena and Maple Shade bear watching. One of Buena’s more impressive games was a 4-1 loss to St. Augustine, which is among the top teams in South Jersey.
The Chiefs will benefit from playing some competitive teams in the Cape Atlantic League. Maple Shade is from the Burlington County Scholastic League and also has some good wins such as against Cinnaminson.
The bottom line is that so many teams figure to contend in Group 1, maybe more than in any other Group.
